In a recent episode of the Mind the Game podcast with LeBron James, Steve Nash, and Stephen Curry, the Triangle and Pinch Post — or Post-to-Pass — play was described.

Let’s Go to Festus

Steve Nash: “The Post-to-Pass — I think it’s important for the casual fan to understand — why is the Post-to-Pass interesting, because you’re not saying ‘Let’s go to Festus here.'”

Triangle = Pinch Post = Post-to-Pass = Chicago Screen = Controlled Chaos

LeBron James: “It’s the same thing the Bulls were doing in the 90’s, when they’d throw the ball into Luc Longley at times, and now the other action starts happening.

Chicago Screen — the Pinch Post — and MJ (Michael Jordan) can come off of it, Scottie Pippen can come off of it.

It’s the same kind of concept that they were doing it was just called The Triangle. So like you said as soon as the ball goes into the post, action begins — controlled chaos. But those guys know exactly what is going on — we’re just trying to get the chain to move on the defense. When you have threats on the floor at all times it can disorient the defense.”

The Haircut Pass is one in which you throw the ball to a teammate but aim it directly at the forehead of your defender in between — his initial reaction is to duck.

Nikola Jokic uses the pass here on Domantas Sabonis to get the ball to Aaron Gordon under the basket for an easy layup as Russell Westbrook goes flying by.

The pass offers surprise and ‘controlled mayhem.’

“In Serbia, it’s called “Haircut,” notes Charlie in the replies to a viral reposting of the thread. “It’s very popular in 3×3 basketball and it always works because people tend to duck when the ball flies close to top of their heads.”

Feedspot ranks Knicks.city #2 in its list of “Top 20 NY Knicks RSS Feeds.”

Feedspot states that this list is of “The best NY Knicks rss feed list curated from thousands of rss feeds on the web and ranked by relevancy, authority, social media followers & freshness.”

Here is the list: https://rss.feedspot.com/ny_knicks_rss_feeds/

We thank our readers and our contributors.

Special shout out to NBA Analyst Ross Kreines who we always look to for quotes of his top-flight analysis of NBA players and the game in general. Shoutout to ideas buddies John Snyder and John Morra for constantly texting up the Knicks. And shoutout to our inhouse team — Terri V, Amanda V, and LV Jr.

And of course shoutout to the Knicks themselves — from owner James Dolan and GM Leon Rose to the players who make it happen, currently: Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson, Miles McBride, Tyler Kolek, Landry Shamet, Ariel Hukporti, Jordan Clarkson and the rest. And of course Tom Thibodeau who we gleaned so much analysis information the last 5 years — much of which were turned into articles. We hope to do the same with new coach Mike Brown.

    2. *PS 8 Courts in Great Kills — I’m adding this court tot he list. Having played basketball on Staten Island for years, this is one of the best courts for competition that I am aware of — the main court at PS 8 in Great Kills.
    3. *Walker Park — I’m also adding Walker Park up by Snug Harbor. It used to have a great reputation, but the area has gentrified and last few times I’ve gone there, the courts have been empty.

Current Knicks from NYC or NYC Area

Interesting to note that Precious Achiuwa of the Knicks grew up in the Bronx, and Karl-Anthony Towns grew up a Knick fan in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Do not know if they’ve played pickup at some of the courts above but they probably have.

The Villanova Connection

Josh Hart grew up in Washington DC — and played college ball with at Villanova with Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo (from Delaware), and Mikal Bridges (from Philadelphia).

The Toppin Brothers

Current Knick Jacob Toppin and his brother and former Knick Obi Toppin were both born and grew up in NYC.

Current Knick Matt Ryan is from NYC.

Current NBA Players from NYC

Other NBA players born in NYC include:

Former NBA Players from NYC

There is a long list of former NBA players that were born and/or raised in NYC and played on these courts. To name a few:

What Type of Ball

What type of ball is best for outdoor courts is a whole ‘nother article — my favorite has been for years the Wilson NCAA synthetic leather, and then my favorite, favorite is the Wilson NCAA red-white-and-blue ABA version:

The Knicks invited Landry Shamet to their training camp before the 2024-25 season, and he played well but injured his shoulder in the pre-season. He finally joined the team in December, 2024 and the Knicks officially signed him to a 1-year contract.

The 6’4, 27-year-old veteran guard looks like the late actor Isaak Kappy, and plays an energetic game. The Knicks are his 7th NBA team, after he was drafted in the 1st round, 26th overall, by Philadelphia in the 2018 draft. He’s since played with the LA Clippers, Phoenix, the Brooklyn Nets, and Washington — typically getting 20 to 27 minutes a night and averaging around 10 pts. He is a lifetime .382 shooter from 3.

When asked about Shamet’s energetic play, Knick coach Tom Thibodeau had this to say about him, after NY beat Toronto 112-98 on January 9, 2025:

“He’s getting his legs under him. That’s what we liked about him. In the pre-season as well.

  1. You can execute with him;
  2. he makes the extra pass;
  3. he reads the floor well;
  4. he hustles on defense;
  5. he blocks out;
  6. he blocks cutters;
  7. he applies ball pressure;
  8. he challenges shots;
  9. he moves without the ball.

There are a lot of things that he does that aren’t necessarily reflected in statistics but he help the team function well.”

Another reason why NY asked Shamet onto the team is his familiarity playing with Cameron Payne; the two high-energy players immediately gave NY a boost on the second team after losing Dante DiVincenzo in the off season due to the Karl-Anthony Towns/Julius Randle trade.

The Knicks are 9-6 to start the 2024-25 season. After a 145-118 win over the Nuggets in Denver, Coach Tom Thibodeau said he feels the Knicks defense is good but needs improvement:

What’s Good About NY’s Defense So Far

  1. “The shell is pretty good. If you look at points in the paint, I think we’re allowing 46 points a game in the paint. So the shell is good.
  2. The defensive transition is good.
  3. The rebounding has been good.”

What Needs Improvement

Thibs continued:

  1. “But it’s more the challenging the shots,
  2. The ball pressure,
  3. Negating the screens,
  4. Getting into the body,
  5. Closing the gaps, doing those sorts of things, and then
  6. Getting to a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th effort that we have to be better at.
  7. And then I want to make sure we’re concentrating on body position. I don’t want to recklessly whack down and give teams points, and that’s where we have to continue to improve.”

Knicks Defenders

In the game against Denver, Thibs noted that Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart “defensively were fantastic”. Karl-Anthony Towns hauled down 15 rebounds in the game.

Miles McBride was back after a 2-week absence due to a sore knee and added to the defensive effort, as did Cameron Payne, and Jalen Brunson, who is a league-leader in taking charges. Jericho Sims has offered excellent defense at the center position. Against Denver, he played 14 minutes, while KAT played 34 minutes.

Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa continue to rehab and are schedule to both be back — Robinson by January, Precious sooner than that.

The one thing that the Knicks will need to deal with is if Robinson is happy with 14 to 18 minutes a game, which is all that seems will be available when he returns.

The post Deuce McBride’s 3-Point Shooting Something Knicks Knew About appeared first on Knicks.City.

Miles McBride, knicknamed Deuce McBride — his favored name — might have to change his knickname soon to Trey McBride as he has been LETHAL from 3 this year, especially after being put into the main rotation after Immanuel Quickley was traded to Toronto on December 27th.

McBride Shooting .416 from 3 So Far this Year

After a 26-point, 6-12 from 3 performance to help NY beat the Brooklyn Nets at Madison Square Garden on March 23rd, McBride is now averaging .416 from 3 on the season. It is a career high in this his 3rd season — having shot .250 and .299 from 3 his first two years.

This is news to many but not news to Knicks management and coaching, who see Deuce McBride in practice and have known how good he is from 3.

Thibs & Knicks Coaches Knew It All Along

Said coach Tom Thibodeau after McBride scored 29 points on efficient 9-13 shooting (6-9 from 3) in a win over Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, 119-112 on March 18th:

“I think I mentioned this to you guys before: We track all the shots. And last year his efficiency in practice was really high. I don’t think there’s anyone on the team that shoots more than he does; maybe Jalen. But you could see how efficiently he was shooting the ball in practice. And usually that’s a sign that in time it will transfer into the games.”

“And in fairness to him,” Thibs continued, “he was never really in the rotation. Sometimes he would be in then he’d be out; and it’s not easy to handle that. He never complained; always ready. There’s a defensive component to him — he’s a 2-way player. And the shooting is just huge. Huge.”

Knicks’ Strategic, End-of-Godfather Move

McBride has always been rumored to be a player Thibs wanted the Knicks to draft in the 2021 draft, when NY selected him with the 6th pick of the 2nd round (#36 overall). Thibs has always spoke highly of McBride’s toughness. In his first year as a Knick, McBride shuttled between G League Westchester — where he was a scoring machine and dynamic player on both ends — and NY where he looked unconfident on offense in games.

But last year, Thibs added McBride to the rotation in December 2022, in lieu of Thibs’ favorite Derrick Rose who found the bench, and the Knicks rolled — McBride’s defensive intensity helped the Knicks reach new team-defense levels and NY had a pretty deep playoff run (they were one of the final 8 teams playing ball).

This year however, the off-season free-agent signing of Donte DiVincenzo forced McBride out of the rotation. That is — until NY traded Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett to Toronto for OG Anunoby and Precious Achiuwa on December 27, 2023.

NY netted the core of Toronto’s main strength — their athletic, aggressive, defensive bigs. The day of the trade — NY signed McBride to a 3-year extension at $3.9 M to $4.7 M a year.

While most of the media was trying to figure out who the Knicks would go get to be their new backup point guard, NY put McBride back into the position and the Knicks started Rolling again, like they did last year.

It was an end-of-Godfather-like strategic move: showcasing Quickley for the 1st half of the season, and keeping McBride in their back pocket. Quickley is a terrific player who can hit the 3 and play D, but he had come up short in last year’s playoffs and wanted a ton of money — reportedly was looking for $25 M a year in last summer’s contract extension talks with the Knicks. Quickley becomes a high-priced free agent this coming summer. Meanwhile the Knicks have McBride playing as good or better ball than Quickley at a fraction of the cost.

And Quickley and RJ were used to go get length, athleticism, defense, and offense in Anunoby and Precious. Anunoby will be asking for a big contract too this summer but that is more palatable for the Knicks as he is a 6’8 All-League defender who can score off the ball and is deadly on 3’s from the corner.

McBride’s Defense Against Elite Guards Like Steph Curry

McBride is always guarding the other team’s elite offensive point guard. In the game against Golden State, he hounded Stephen Curry into numerous turnovers.

“The challenge with Curry is you have to guard him off the dribble initially, and then it turns into catch and shoot,” said coach Thibodeau after the game. “You have to have the discipline to stay attached to him once he gives the ball up because that’s when he becomes real dangerous. You can never let your guard down with him whether it’s transition, pick and roll, catch and shoot — and they do a great job of searching him out. When he gets off the ball he’s going to get a 2nd and 3rd look. It’s not an easy task; he (McBride) chased him all night; he never stops moving; he’s in phenomenal shape. I thought Deuce did a terrific job.”

Thibs Credits Leon Rose & Staff for McBride Find

Despite the rumor that the Knicks drafted McBride at his insistence, Thibs credited Leon Rose and Staff after the game against Golden State, when asked about McBride’s recovery off a turnover and ensuing defense against Curry that caused a Curry turnover just before the half:

“It was one of the things that we really liked about him when we drafted him. I give Leon and the staff a lot of credit for it. They liked that component. We were trying to add those types of players. We thought the shooting would come around. We knew he was a gym rat. We liked the program he was coming out of (West Virginia), I think that’s important.”

“His toughness; his competitiveness; his drive; his ability to think on his feet,” continued Thibs. “Those were the characteristics that we valued and we liked (about him). Once we got him and we saw how he worked and how he was as a teammate, we knew he was a great fit. And he’ll continue to get better.”

McBride’s Endurance

After the Quickley trade, McBride was injected into the Knick rotation and with all the NY injuries, soon found himself playing major minutes. He had 4 games of 40+ minutes in January and February, including games of 46 minutes against Atlanta Dejounte Murray (Trae Young was out), and 47 minutes against Cleveland and Darius Garland.

With OG Anunoby currently out, McBride has played all 48 minutes against Brooklyn and Cam Thomas, 41 minutes against Denver and Jamal Murray, and 47 minutes against Golden State and Stephen Curry.

On the Knick broadcast of March 23rd, Rebecca Harlow noted that McBride said he spent every day in the summer running hills, and sprints on the track. His running was for “miles and miles”, according to Harlow. McBride said he has “never taken more than 10 days off since he’s been in league.”

Deuce Is a Gym Rat — Continues to Work on His Treys

In a story in the NY Post on March 22nd, Stefan Bondy reported that McBride shot 500 3’s a day during the summer — 250 in the morning, and 25o later in the day.

McBride has become an absolute 2-way weapon for NY — something Knick management saw coming.

In a game against the Charlotte Hornets on January 29, 2024, the Knicks used crisp passing and a head’s up offensive approach to rip the Hornets despite being without Julius Randle and OG Anunoby.

Jalen Brunson attacked the basket and scored 32 points, and Donte DiVincenzo played an aggressive head’s up brand of basketball, scoring on drives, making quick decisions and pinpoint passes, and hitting the 3 ball for 28 points. Josh Hart was in the middle of the offense, as were Quentin Grimes, Miles McBride, Precious Achiuwa, Jericho Sims, and Isaiah Hartenstein.

Afterwards, coach Tom Thibodeau revealed what the Knicks strategy on offense was and how an important part of it is players with an ability not measured by any statistic:

  • “You want to try to attack the defense before it’s set.
  • But once you get down if the 3rd defender is back, moving to the second side, get downhill into spacing try to create advantages for each other.
  • Moving without the ball and making quick decisions is important.
  • What I really like about Josh — he keeps it going. There’s really not a stat for that, because a lot of it is not only the movement, but it’s the screening off the ball and there are quick decisions.
  • OG is really good at that too — moving without the ball and making quick decisions, as is Donte.
  • I think that’s important for us.”

The Immanuel Quickley trade has unlocked Miles McBride — who was out of the rotation this season after the addition of Donte DiVincenzo to the backcourt.

McBride’s addition to the rotation last season (at the expense of Derrick Rose who found the bench) turned the Knicks season around.

His on-ball defense is fantastic. He is knicknamed “Deuce” McBride but he can hit the 3 and score in a variety of ways.  In a game against Philly on January 5th, 2024 — McBride hit 4 (four) consecutive 3’s at the end of the 1st quarter to turn a 10-pt Philly lead into a NY advantage — triggering a Knick rout of the 76ers.

“We’re going to have to start calling him “Trey”! He’s not a Deuce he’s a Trey!” — said Walt Frazier on the broadcast.

Unlocking McBride Part of Knick Management Plan

Knicks management seemed to be announcing this strategic move of unlocking McBride by re-signing him to a 3-year, $13 Million extension right after the trade of Immanuel Quickley & RJ Barrett for OG Anunoby & Precious Achiuwa.

Thibs on McBride

“We saw it last year when he filled in,” said coach Tom Thibodeau. “We got glimpses of it. When you study what he did in the G League when he got extended minutes — he’s just a fierce competitor. There’s so many things that you can say about him. He’s very confident. That’s what I love about him. He can make a shot; he can go off the dribble.”

In his first game with extended minutes after the trade, McBride didn’t seem to do so well but he has been heating up since. “Your first instinct is maybe he didn’t play as good as he could have,” said coach Thibodeau referring to McBride’s first game after the trade, vs Minnesota. “But then you watch the film he has 2 charges, he makes a 3 and it’s really a by product of the unit not functioning well together. We need a little time for everyone to adjust. We’re not going to make excuses; we’re going to find a way to get it done; hopefully we get better each and every day.”

Ball Moving Freely After the Trade; Knicks Pace Improved

“Honestly, teammates kept finding me — and you can’t pass up open opportunities,” said McBride on the 4 (four) consecutive 3’s he hit vs Philly. “I shot it with confidence and trusted my preparation.”

Walt Frazier asked McBride about the Knicks play after the trade, to which Frazier observed “how freely the ball is moving now, and the pace with which you guys are playing.”

“One of our main focuses is to play with pace; trust the pass; make sure everyone is getting involved because you know the ball has energy in it so we just want to feed off of each other,” said McBride. “I’m very thankful to this organization for 1) drafting me and then trusting me to extend me. I’m just happy to be here.”
